.history.
Since the day she was born, Hilary has been groomed to be a noble lady. Fairen was a house of little standing in the political games that sometimes played over the landscape of Megam, and both of her parents knew that marrying their beautiful daughter to a powerful lord would elevate Fairen to power and glory.
Thus, Hilary grew to be a beautiful young woman, just as predicted. She excelled in all of her lessons, becoming an accomplished dancer, musician, and noblewoman. Along with these skills, she was taught the art of the sword, to be able to impress her future husband with all of her various skills. Well-rounded, beautiful, gentle, and willing to please, Hilary was a Megam nobleman's dream.
It was in her teenage years when the dream came to fruition. After a ball held by House Fairen in honor of the birthday of Hilary and her brother, Cameryn. The ball had been long and wonderful, full of dancing, and afterward, Lord Caroval of Emilia expressed his wish to marry Hilary to her father. Less than a month passed before the marriage took place, Hilary all in white silk and Caroval in dark finery.
Cameryn had expressed his dislike of the marriage since his father had started planning, and while Hilary agreed with the sentiments, she knew that the arrangements were necessary. This had been planned since before she was born, and she had been groomed for it since she was still a child.
It was not the only thing that had been going on since her childhood.
It had started with a small kiss, an imitation of the lords and ladies that she and Cameryn saw at the few balls that their father held from time to time. What began as a kiss soon turned into something more, something deeper, and something that neither one of them felt able to stop. They needed each other; they loved each other, and Cameryn was certain that Caroval could never love Hilary as much as he did. Hilary knew he was right, but also knew that she could not refuse Caroval, lest she raise her father's suspicions of if she had another lover. The thing she wanted least was for him to find out about the relationship between her and Cameryn. She made Cameryn two promises: one to see him again, and a second to always love him most, and then prepared to depart for Lucre, and soon enough to don her wedding veil.
It came as a shock to all of her family when, the day she was to leave for Lucre, Cameryn announced that he was giving up his birthright to his younger brother. Cameryn announced that he would go to Lucre as well, to become a member of Lucre's Holy Guard. He would take oaths, give up his land, and guard the City of Light with all his strength.
And, of course, he would be nearer to Hilary.
The shock settled into congratulations and pleasure from their family, many praising Cameryn's piety and his selfless choice. To give up all he had been destined for in order to guard Lucre was selfless. Valiant.
Only Hilary understood the true nature of Cameryn's choice.
The years passed -- nine of them. While Hilary's marriage was not unhappy, nor was it peaceful. All Caroval wanted her to be was exactly what her family wanted her to be: a fair little housewife without a thought in her head. It was never something that she could stand, and her period of mourning after his death one year ago was very short.
Hilary gave birth to three sons and one daughter before her husband's death, and she meets with Cameryn often these days. Her affair with him never stopped; they saw no point in stopping something that they'd never been able to stop before. Hilary has all the power her family dreamt of her obtaining ever since she was born. She sits the Council of Eleven until her first son comes of age.
She is always careful to keep secrets how they should be: secret.

.personality.
In the public eye, Hilary is just what she was raised to be: a kind, demure gentlewoman who is obedient and loving as much as she is beautiful. Through this, though, runs a wide manipulative streak. When others see her as lonely, afraid, and in need of a companion, she exploits that to get help, assistance, and anything else that she may need. No one would ever suspect the noble lady Hilary of being conniving or sly, because, of course, she isn't. She's just a helpless woman who needs help, and knows how to ask. And since Hilary's so innocent, so kind, so gentle, she could never do something like that. She is always, always innocent, and, poor thing, being left alone by her husband while she's still so young.
Hilary's not afraid to perpetuate this rumor, because it helps her get what she wants. She has always been ambitious, always wanted to accomplish herself in the world. The ambition has been bred in her along with her seemingly-gentle demeanor since she was a child, influenced by her father's own ambitions to make her family prominent. Her wishes have slowly come to fruition, despite and because of her marriage to Caroval of Emilia.
Her marriage was never a peaceful one, though neither was it unhappy. Hilary simply despised being subservient to a man who expected her to be softpoken, demure, kind, and obedient -- everything she appeared to be that her husband discovered that she was not after they were wed.
Most people would describe Hilary as softspoken, kind, innocent, and above all, lonely, now that her husband has died. Cameryn, of course, would describe her differently, as he is the one man who still knows who she really is. To Cameryn, her masks are all down: Hilary is ambitious, intelligent, and cunning, unafraid to work to get what she wants. She is more vulnerable than ever before where Cameryn is involved, and a harsh word or cruel act from him can send her into silence. She is also fearfully jealous and possessive of Cameryn, and will often become angered or cold when she thinks he is being rude or unkind to her.
Hilary, currently sitting the Council of Eleven in place of her eldest son, is not afraid to use her power as she must, but of course, no one would ever suspect her of doing so. She's almost innocently naive in her suggestions to the council, though said suggestions often work out better than anyone could have imagined. She's not afraid to be clever; she's just good at hiding exactly how clever she can be.
If anything that others say about her is completely true, it is that she is a loving mother. Her four children mean the world to her, and she dotes on them constantly whenever she is with them. Some worry that they'll grow up to be spoiled, because Hilary never hesitates to give them what they need or ask for.

.appearance.
Hilary was called the fair rose of Fairen, and deservingly so. Her hair is long, dark, and curly, and she oft wore said roses braided into her hair while she was yet unmarried. She has large, sparkling green eyes, and long, dark eyelashes. She is slim and beautiful, with pale skin that sharply contrasts her darker features. She seems to wear a perpetual smile upon her face, and always wears long gowns fitting for a lady of her station.

[Hilary is a fictional character for himitsu_sensou. She is played by dots, who just can't get enough of these here immoral nobles in Megam. Hilary is PB'd by Nadeshiko from Card Captor Sakura.]
